General Conditions
All Academic members, including New York must complete an online education program each year. The course also qualifies our membership to receive 1st excess policy coverage ($1M above $1.3M primary policy)* at no charge, policyholders must complete, by New York regulation (1) In Year 1: a five-hour course, a Post Project (critical case review) and evaluation, and (2) annually thereafter, a three hour follow-up course, a Post Project and evaluation.

We urge our physicians to print a certificate of completion, available at the end of the session. Although you are not required to send the certificate to Academic, the certificate will serve as a reminder and indicate the date of completion.

Free Excess Coverage for New York Subscribers:

New York subscribers must complete the appropriate course before applying for excess policy coverage. By completing the appropriate course subscribers will become eligible for the July 1, 2015 through June 30, 2016 1st excess policy coverage.

New Insurance Regulations specify that required courses must be completed before the start of any excess policy issuance year. There is no retroactivity.

Academic's excess application form will ask the subscriber to sign and affirm that the applicant has successfully completed Academic's applicable online excess education course. These application forms will be sent by Academic in early May. They must be returned before June 1, 2015 in order for underwriters to have ample time to complete, process and check your enrollment before the July 1st effective excess coverage date.

Please be advised that unless the applicable course is timely completed and attestation is set forth in the excess application, the free excess insurance will not be provided. If you do not take the online course, or if you do not successfully complete the course, you will be able to apply to purchase an excess policy.

Please note that online course content and eligibility requirements may be subject to change as a result of new regulations or interpretations of existing insurance regulations.

* Academic is a domiciled and authorized New York reciprocal medical malpractice insurer. As such, our policyholders remain eligible for this state funded excess insurance program. However, each year, eligibility is ultimately determined by the state government in terms of available funding and the number of physicians who become or remain eligible. Due to the state regulation of this program, Academic cannot warrant or guaranty that any or all policyholders will qualify or remain eligible for the program in the July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015 excess policy year.
